If you're shopping online and you're looking at the size chart, you need to know your body figure and body measurements to order the correct size and the right shape wear for your body. You will also need to know what to avoid. What you're going to need is a clothes measurement tape not a metal one, and to get most accurate results it's best to wear form fitting clothing or do it naked. If you are trying to gain weight or lose weight, clothes measurement can be very good indicator.
Waist: With the waist make sure you place it at the narrowest part of your torso. Don't squeeze the stomach when you take this measurement and avoid holding your breath. The tape measure should be snug but not too tight. You can use your waist and hip measurements to calculate your WHR (Waist to Hip Ratio) an assessment that can help you determine your health risk. For women, measurement of 31.5 inches or more indicates high risk, for men waist measurement of 37 inches or more indicates high risk!
Hips: Don't get scared. We're all unique and beautiful. Stand up straight with your feet together, place the tape on the widest part of the hips/butt (usually the area where your hip bones are located), is approximately 20 cm (8 inches) below the waist. The tape measure should be snug but not too tight.
Thighs: Measure 10 inches above the kneecap (patella) for consistency.
Chest: Place the tape under your arms, around the fullest part of your chest, at the nipple line. Make sure that you are wearing a very natural bra. Not a padded bra or push up bra because that can add a few fake inches. Don't do it very tight. You want to do it snugly but not too tight, if it's too tight it wont give an accurate measurement.
For Pants: Measure upward from the crotch to waist or hip. Inside leg - Measure down from crotch to the top of the ankle bone.
Shoulder: Place the tape on "top" of the shoulder. Measure from one shoulder bone to the other shoulder bone.
Neck: Make sure the neck stands straight with your head slightly forward. When you are measuring around the neck you want to place the tape where the Adam's apple would be. Slip the finger under the tape to insure some breathing space.
Note: If you're using centimeters, divide the number with 2.54 and you'll get the numbers in inches.
